HP Technology Grant
Hosford Middle School will receive an award package of HP products and a cash award for each teacher with a total value of more than $38,000.
Each of the HP Technology for Teaching grant recipients will use wireless HP Tablet PC technology to enhance learning in multiple disciplines, with a focus on math and science. At Hosford, the grant will support and enhance the curriculum and learning experience of sixth grade science students going to Outdoor School in the fall. Sixth grade science students spend a week in a wilderness camp setting learning about the ecological relationships between plants, animals, water and soil. Students will use the technology to collect and record data in the field that can be stored and reviewed later in the classroom by math students who will tabulate, graph and analyze the data to determine how water and soil quality affect plant and animal species types and abundance.
“This is a unique project in that it will provide students with an early opportunity to experience how research is applied to real world decision-making processes -- to be engaged in ‘real science’ in the sense that they do field work, record and analyze data, then make recommendations for site improvements to the agencies overseeing Outdoor School, environmental field trip sites and the school’s native gardens,” says ESL teacher Zsuzsa Nemeth. “In addition,” she continues, “this technology will help teachers to differentiate instruction for English Language Learners and students with learning disabilities.”
The Hosford team receiving the grant includes a 6th grade science teacher, two math teachers who teach 6th and 7th grade math, a computer teacher and an English as a Second Language teacher.
HP is awarding 149 K-12 public schools and two- and four-year colleges and universities in the United States and Puerto Rico more than $7 million in mobile technology, cash and professional development as part of the 2008 HP Technology for Teaching grant program. Since 2004, HP has contributed a total of $60 million in HP Technology for Teaching grants to more than 1,000 schools in 41 countries worldwide. During the past 20 years, HP has contributed more than $1 billion in cash and equipment to schools, universities, community organizations and other nonprofit organizations around the world.
“Around the world, HP partners with pioneering teachers and schools to discover how technology can improve student success,” said Sid Espinosa, director of Global Social Investment programs at HP. “While technology is not the answer to every educational challenge, we have witnessed its incredible and transformative impact in the classroom. This innovation is happening every day as teaching and learning are fundamentally changing. By helping teachers help students, HP is actively investing in the future of our children and our communities.”
Vision Into Action Grant
The African Girls Basketball Team will build athletic and communication skills for girls who were born and raised in Kenya and Somalia and now attend Hosford Middle School. The program will help to bridge the social chasm that exists between this immigrant population and others students attending Hosford Middle School. The typical basketball uniform will be modified to conform to the girls' Muslim beliefs, allowing the girls to maintain pride in their cultural and religious heritage while participating in this mainstream activity
Climate Change Camera Grant
We also are beneficiaries of a schoolyard stormwater project. Lower Columbia Region Estuary Partnership is the recipient of a Community Benefit Opportunity Grant under the City of Portland's Eastside Bigpipe Project (the new huge sewer lines being built to accomodate combined sewer overflows). The grant is to build two school stormwater gardens. We're one of the schools. The garden will be just west of the north wing. The trees will be moved. The garden will get some of its water from the roof of the north wing. That water will be diverted from the stormwater system to the garden.
